At Mill Park Physiotherapy Centre the physiotherapists use real time ultrasound to look at and assist with retraining weak muscles. Real time ultrasound is similar that used to view the foetus during pregnancy and allows the physiotherapist to see whether particular muscles are active during movements and exercise
Commonly real time ultrasound is used to view the deep ‘core’ abdominal muscles to ensure that they are active and stabilising the spine. If retraining is required this can be done using the ultrasound guidance. More recently the physiotherapists are using the ultrasound to look at pelvic floor function and deep hip muscles.
The physiotherapist may incorporate the real time ultrasound into your physiotherapy appointment, particularly to assess the muscle function. In some cases client may benefit from specific appointments to use the ultrasound machine to improve muscle activity.
